Hansel and Grethel sat by the fire, and when noon came, each ate a little piece of bread, and as they heard the strokes of the wood-axe they believed that their father was near. It was not, however, the axe, it was a branch which he had fastened to a withered tree which the wind was blowing backwards and forwards. And as they had been sitting such a long time, their eyes shut with fatigue, and they fell fast asleep. When at last they awoke, it was already dark night. Grethel began to cry and said, “How are we to get out of the forest now?” But Hansel comforted her and said, “Just wait a little, until the moon has risen, and then we will soon find the way.” And when the full moon had risen, Hansel took his little sister by the hand, and followed the pebbles which shone like newlycoined silver pieces, and showed them the way.

João e Maria sentaram perto do fogo e quando a noite veio, cada um comeu o pequeno pedaço de pão e como ouviam o barulho do machado de madeira, acreditam que seu pai estava perto. Não estava, entretanto, o machado era um galho que ele tinha prendido a uma árvore seca que o vento estava balançando para frente e para trás. E como eles estavam sentados por um longo tempo, seus olhos fecharam de cansaço e dormiram rapidamente. Quando finalmente acordaram, já era madrugada. Maria começou a chorar e disse, "Como nós vamos sair da floresta agora?" Mas João a confortou e disse: "Apenas espere um pouco, até a lua nascer, e então nós iremos rapidamente encontrar o caminho." E quando a lua cheia nasceu, João pegou sua irmãzinha pela mão e seguiram os seixos que brilhavam como moedas de prata novas, e mostravam a eles o caminho.
